What if the world’s best software entrepreneurs, the ones who could raise serious money, used all their special powers to take on big real-world projects, like schools, hospitals, labs and factories? This essay is based on my recent Tedx Windy City talk Take the Red Pill.

Since Netscape’s public offering in 1995, more than 6,500 pure Internet companies have raised venture capital. But only 18 are worth more than $1 billion. Thirty years after the software revolution started, only 12 of the Fortune 500 are pure software companies. Twelve out of 500 isn’t a revolution at all; it’s the Massachusetts delegation to the House of Representatives.
It turns out to be very difficult to get customers to pay you hundreds of millions of dollars if you don’t offer something substantial in return. Perhaps this is why our industry is undergoing an existential crisis, marked not just by the usual cyclical funding crunches but by a sense of weariness I’ve never seen in Silicon Valley before.
There are two venture-funded companies for shipping men’s underwear in the mail. There’s an iPhone app for Apple fans to date one another, a polling service for Twitter followers to pick baby names.
Software matters more than that. As Netscape founder Marc Andreesen observed in his 2011 essay, ’Why Software Is Eating the World,’ software is probably the most powerful lever for change the world has ever seen.
We just have to look at it the right way. The way Mr. Andreesen sees it, the world is becoming increasingly virtual: Convert dmg to iso on windows.
Amazon rearranged its web site to promote its Kindle digital books over physical books for the first time. Now even the books themselves are software. Today’s largest video service by number of subscribers is a software company: Netflix.’
But wait, that’s backwards. Yes the real world is in some cases becoming more virtual. But what’s more important now is that the virtual world is becoming real. Amazon may be shipping electronic rather than physical books, but in my neighborhood, it’s also delivering groceries via its own trucks. The company may lose the battle to deliver virtual goods, but it is winning the war to deliver actual goods.
Even the Netflix example cited by Mr. Andreesen isn’t a simple story of the real world becoming virtual.
Consider the runaway hit ’House of Cards,’ which Netflix produced after noticing that the customers who loved the 1990 BBC miniseries of the same name also loved Kevin Spacey. It wasn’t such a stretch to imagine an American remake starring Kevin Spacey would touch a nerve with Netflix’s 30 million subscribers. Netflix used its virtual advantage of deep customer data to create a real-world advantage, made from physical sets and flesh-and-blood actors. In the viciously competitive streaming market, the real Kevin Spacey is what makes Netflix’s virtual service stand apart.
What’s really interesting is what Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said about Netflix’s transformation into a live-action studio: “The goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us.”
In other words, the goal is for a virtual company to become a real company faster than the real company can become virtual. Linkedin is making the same effort with this essay, hiring editors and journalists to cultivate business writers: Linkedin is trying to become Bloomberg faster than Bloomberg can become Linkedin.
Who Will Win?

So what’s easier to do? Is it easier for a virtual company to get real or the other way around? Which companies will win the next 20 years, the new virtual ones or the old real ones?
To answer this question, consider another example. What was harder for Google: spending a decade to create an online map of every road and alley? Or strapping that map onto a car that drives itself?
It was of course, harder to build the map. Does this mean that 20 years from now, a company like Google might be a better auto manufacturer than a company like General Motors? Now that’s crazy talk.
Except it isn’t: Tesla, an electric car company now taking the world by storm, was started and run by computer scientists.
What other real-world incursions have been led by computer scientists? How about Nest, maker of a learning thermostat that starts heating your house half an hour before you arrive? It was built by the same folks who created the iPod. Five years ago, no one would have expected a high-tech entrepreneur to build a product for Home Depot’s shelves.
An Airplane Manufacturer is a Software Company
Sure, but what about more traditional industries, like say, airplane manufacturing?
Well, it turns out that designing and building an airplane is mostly a gigantic software project. Each physical test of a wing costs more than $1 million. Supercomputers that were once limited to universities now model how a wing design will perform in freezing weather, after 10,000 flights, minimizing fuel consumption and maximizing safety. As a result, a million designs are tested online for every one that is actually built.
In other words, an airplane manufacturer is a software company, by a factor of a million to one. It is not inconceivable that a computer scientist, working with aerospace engineers, will one day lead such a company. Anyone familiar with Boeing’s 787, now five years late and billions over budget, has to wonder when the Tesla or Nest of airplanes is coming.
Let’s get more down and dirty. What about drilling for oil? Surely this is an intrinsically physical process of resource extraction. No, it isn’t. It turns out a technology called full wave-field inversion now allows oil & gas companies to find oil in places we had given up on or overlooked, which is the main reason why gas is back to three dollars a gallon. An oil & gas company is a software company.
Why Make Software for a Bank When You Can Just Be the Bank?
So does that mean that computer scientists can collaborate with folks in the real world to create new, disruptive companies? It does. Even the world of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck will change because of these new partnerships. This has been the fundamental lesson of the company where I work, Redfin. And a better virtual world of course allows us to build a better real world. It’s not unusual for our customers to cry when we complete the purchase or sale of their home. None of this would’ve happened if we’d sold ads to Century 21.
It almost didn’t happen regardless. Though successful now, Redfin was turned down by more than 100 venture capitalists from 2006 - 2010. At the peak of the Facebook-crazed media boom, it became so difficult for us to raise money that we started each pitch by saying, “Here’s what’s weird about Redfin: we employ our own real estate agents. Hundreds of them.” Most meetings effectively ended right there.

With macOS High Sierra Apple introduced the APFS filesystem with improved integrity protection. You can boot into Windows just fine, but when you wish to load a Boot Camp OS within a virtual machine the loader complains about a missing disk or some missing EFI elements. Eventually you get a blue Boot Manager screen with a bunch of options. According to VMware is UEFI missing an APFS driver.
This is also the case when installing an EFI based operating system directly in the VM without using Boot Camp.
To make it work you need to losen the integrity protection of your entire Mac. On some forums people just disable the protection completely, but I highly recommend to not doing that! It also protects against some nasty malware attacks on a deep system level. What I suggest to do is to only disable the protection on the filesystem.
This is not ideal either, but at least Fusion can access the Boot Camp partition while not exposing other layers to attacks. Until VMware finds a way to access Boot Camp in a secure way this is all you can do. They are working on it though:
No APFS driver in UEFI renders the Guest OS unbootable when the Guest boot volume is using APFS.
Rest assured we are very excited about and interested in leveraging the new capabilities found in Apple’s new File System, but for now it will give you an OS that you can not boot in a Virtual Machine.
As such, during the installation, be sure to NOT check the ‘Use APFS’ checkbox, otherwise you will render the VM unbootable.The bandage
Warning: These are not the best fixes because you are lowering the security of your system. A real fix can only be done if macOS and Fusion play nice together, keeping the app sandbox intact. But given the nature of I/O access to the BootCamp partition such high security method will be close to impossible in the current app/OS design.
In case you still want to continue, the options you have are:
*Don’t enable the more secure APFS during the macOS upgrade when APFS is not yet applied;
*Bypass the filesystem protection by granting full disk access to Fusion;
*Bypass the filesystem protection by completely disabling it in the core OS.Method 1: Full disk access for Fusion
Why is this bad? You should never allow apps full access to your entire Mac. Apps can carry malware or really bad bugs, even those from well known companies like VMware. Instead each app should be able to function perfectly within its own sandbox. Granting full disk access to an app is like giving it a key to your house and blindly trusting them, their friends (i.e. third party components) and anyone else they see fit with access to all your data. They can do anything with it, from deletion, alteration and encrypting your files for ransom all the way to uploading your stuff to the wide public world.

You can also do ‘enable’ which should enable all parts, but ‘clear’ will reset them to the OS defaults. At the moment the outcome is the same. When you are installing an EFI based OS to install directly in VM (non-boot camp) try a BIOS variant instead and create a custom VM with legacy BIOS enabled instead of EFI. Otherwise it may work as well, but in my trial and error the BIOS combination came out best.

Now, we have to select a source image which will be your dmg file you want to convert. After that, select the destination image file and name it as the name of the iso file you want at the end. Below that, there is a drop down menu where you have to select the output file format, select iso file format there.

After that, there are image file settings options where you can password protect the images but since we are converting dmg file to iso, iso doesn’t have password protection options so that section is greyed out.

Now, select OK to start the conversion process. Wait for a few minutes for the conversion to complete. When the conversion is complete, you should get a message which says “Converting image file completes successfully”. If there is an error, check whether the input dmg file is corrupted or not. If there are no errors, go to the location of the output file you specified earlier, you should have an iso output file of the name you have given.

For one season, “misunderstood” might be the best way to describe JaMarcus Russell. It’s the lone word in the bio of his inactive Twitter account, which isn’t verified and hasn’t yielded a tweet in nearly five years.
He joined the social media platform in the summer of 2010 — the same year the once-promising quarterback, who quickly emerged as a bona fide NFL bust, was released by the Oakland Raiders after just three seasons in the league.
Looking back at his 31-game pro career, it’s hard to comprehend just how far, and how fast, Russell fell from NFL grace. But at the same time, it’s easy to remember how much promise he once possessed to complement his supreme physical gifts.
There’s the story of him as a high school phenom from Mobile, Alabama, throwing the ball 70 yards from his knees during a recruiting visit to LSU. Fast-forward a few years and there’s his magical junior season in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which he finished as a first-team All-SEC selection, the Manning Award winner as the nation’s top quarterback and Sugar Bowl MVP before deciding to forgo his senior year to enter the NFL. And then there’s the performance he put on display at LSU’s pro day before the draft, which left those in attendance salivating.
“I can’t remember being in such awe of a quarterback in my decade of attending combines and pro days. Russell’s passing session was the most impressive of all the pro days I’ve been to,” said ESPN analyst Todd McShay in 2007, while his colleague, Mel Kiper Jr., took the praise to even greater heights, proclaiming that “three years from now, you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league.” Jon Gruden, then the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, likened the quarterback’s play to a movie. “The workout Russell had was Star Wars. It was unbelievable.”
Oakland ultimately selected the 6-foot-6, 265-pound Russell No. 1 overall in the 2007 NFL draft. It was a decision that seemed like a no-brainer to everyone except then-first-year Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin, who had his sights set on future Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson for the top pick. Yet, at the urging of owner Al Davis, the Raiders went with the player many assumed to be their future franchise quarterback. A huge red flag, however, arose when Russell missed training camp because of a contract holdout before eventually inking the richest rookie deal in NFL history — worth as much as $68 million over six years, with $32 million guaranteed — two weeks into the 2007 regular season. Russell played in only four games, while making just one start, as a rookie. During his second year in the NFL, he started 15 games for the Raiders despite losing Kiffin, whom Davis fired a month into the 2008 regular season. Russell’s third NFL season began with him reporting to training camp weighing 305 pounds and ended with him on the bench, having won only two games in nine starts.
In May 2010, the Raiders released their former No. 1 pick, ending Russell’s career in Oakland with just seven wins, 4,083 passing yards, 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in three seasons. He never made a Pro Bowl or played in a postseason. He never recorded more than 277 passing yards, or threw for more than two touchdowns, in a game.
Two months after the Raiders released him, Russell was arrested for possessing codeine syrup without a prescription. A grand jury did not indict him based on insufficient evidence.
“I could’ve went about certain things differently. I’m not sure where they went wrong. But the things that did go wrong, I take full blame for whatever was my fault, and the things that did happen. Being drafted No. 1, it’s so much they want you to do at a snap of a finger. It didn’t happen that way,” Russell said on Showtime’s Inside the NFL in 2010 while trying to make a return to the NFL with the help of former NBA player/coach turned life coach John Lucas. If it is only Web browsing that seems to be slower than it used to, that is usually the result of such pages becoming ever more demanding of hardware and bandwidth. Other than buying more memory, there is little you can do to cope with such so-called progress.

If you’re experiencing general slowdowns or ’freezes’ unrelated to Internet activity, the problem may be related to your computer or the software you installed and is something you may be able to fix, or at least improve. Aside from hardware failures and software that you install, including OS upgrades, there is no reason that your computer should not work exactly as well as the day it was built.
